Our story

Gallery owners Caroline Pendray and John Maddock have extensive backgrounds in the mental health sector and together had a vision of a unique space where artists could not only showcase their work but also openly share the profound stories and transformative journeys behind their creations.

With Caroline's extensive background in the mental health sector, spanning 14 years of dedicated practice as a trained to master’s level art therapist and John's experience in supporting individuals grappling with mental health and addiction challenges, they embarked on a unique joint venture to establish Liberation Art Gallery right in the heart of Brighton, nestled in its renowned jewellery lanes. They have pioneered a unique approach to the traditional art gallery, seamlessly integrating a therapeutic model within a mainstream retail environment, creating a fusion of artistic expression and a space for mental well being.

Caroline drew upon her profound understanding of the therapeutic power of art as a medium for self-expression and healing, bringing a nuanced perspective to the gallery's mission, aiming to cultivate a safe and accessible space for artists, recognising that many of them turn to art as a means of self-therapy and self-care.  Together, Caroline and John wanted to create a space that goes way beyond just the traditional gallery exhibition space and instead served as a haven for artists to not only showcase their creativity but also to embark on a journey of personal healing.

The gallery offers three levels of art and mental well being space.

The third level houses an intimate therapy space, staffed by qualified and experienced art therapists.

The second level serves as a dynamic workshop and gallery space, fostering creativity and community engagement.

The first level is dedicated to the main exhibition space, showcasing a multitude of exhibitions of thought provoking artwork, that explores themes around mental health and well-being. A lot of our artists may have experienced significant trauma and are creating their stunning art for their well-being, addressing mental health related themes such as body dysmorphia, grief, anxiety or the management of addiction.

Liberation Art Gallery's mission extends far beyond the physical space. We not only engage with the community through exhibitions, discussions, workshops and artist talks, but we actively collaborate with local organisations and mental health professionals, aiming to challenge the stigma around mental health, raise awareness, provide resources and offer a space for therapeutic support.

We work closely with Brighton and Hove schools’ mental health service to provide a group art therapy service for young people currently not able to attend school for various reasons, kindly sponsored by Cass Art. An upcoming exhibition, 'From Within,' will be showcasing artwork that focuses on catharsis and healing by exploring the connection between art creation and well-being.

Liberation Art Gallery emphasises the importance of self-reflection for emerging and established artists, encouraging them to connect with the community, using art as a tool for communication and prioritising their well-being.

Our missiion ahead is to continue to forge a deep connection with the community, expand our range of workshops, events and exhibitions, and continue to foster a vibrant artistic community, focusing on mental health and well-being.
